Pantan Musara - Aceh, Sumatra
Indonesian coffee cultivation began on the island of Java in the late 1600s by Dutch settlers who smuggled seeds over from Yemen. From there production spread to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which became famous for earthy, chocolaty coffees with low acidity and a creamy mouthfeel. In the Aceh region, coffee is grown on volcanic mountains in the midst of the rainforest. Beans from this humid region are processed with the wet-hulling method known locally as Giling Basah, which contributes to the spicy and herbaceous qualities found in this unique offering. Over 95% of coffee produced in the Aceh region comes from small landholders, and over 80% of these producers are women.
